Thinking about those Floridian beaches, Disney World, or maybe retiring to a neat Fort Lauderdale cul-de-sac? Well, Florida’s screwworm resurgence is making us say “screw that!” In 1982, the screwworm was successfully wiped out after it ate through livestock, domestic pets, and humans. Biologists freed sterile screwworm males and the parasitic population was successfully eradicated. The Atlantic goes into depth about the screwworm’s history in the U.S. and what disgusting thing it does to land mammals. They call it “flesh-burrowing.”
Now they’re back!
Experts are not sure how the current infestation occurred but all signs are pointing to freshly reopened trade and travel routes with Cuba.
